A very rare Merovingian tremissis from the Garrett and Ponton d'Amécourt collections

MEROVINGIANS. Uncertain. Circa 6th century. Tremissis (Gold, 16 mm, 1.34 g, 6 h), uncertain mint. DINIVSTINIΛ Diademed, draped and cuirassed male bust to right. Rev. VICTVIΛΛVSNIΛI Victory standing facing, holding small cross in her right hand and diadem in her left; to left, monogram. Belfort 5318 (this coin). Very rare. A beautiful piece, well struck and with an exceptional pedigree. Some graffiti, otherwise, good very fine.

The precise origin of this beautiful coin remains uncertain, but its type and style indicate it was issued in the 6th century. It boasts a rich history, having been part of the collections of John Work Garrett (1872-1942), who served as the American ambassador to Venezuela, Argentina, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Italy, and the French nobleman, numismatist, and inventor Vicomte Gustave de Ponton d’Amécourt (1825-1888).
